The Apparatus shows a photographer taking photographs. We do not see what she is recording but we follow all the individual steps in the process: how she looks at her subject, how the camera behaves in relation to the body, how the body—the locomotor apparatus—turns towards the object. The whole session is recorded in a laboratory situation: the figure wears different styles of clothing—casual look and bullet-proof vest with helmet—and moves on an office carpet between cuboid objects. Different places and scenarios with different meanings are simulated. Steinbach’s previous series Figur I, Figur II and Gesellschaft beginnt mit drei were more about appearance, the question of the legibility of signs, gestures, and the relationships between the figures: here, in The Apparatus, the focus is on a storyline with a figure. It is the third and, for the time being, last part in Andrzej Steinbach’s portrait series.

During my visits to the energetic training sessions of the Belgian ‘Acrogym Men 4’ team I became fascinated by the immense drive and discipline of these four young men (15-22 years). Their towering ambition and inexhaustible perseverance, is almost outdated.

-------------------------------------------- Aurore Valade creates images that play with the iconic register of scenography. She photographs people playing their own role, in their own homes. In these very elaborate stagings, we are often confronted with clichés, meaningful reflections of a social, economic or cultural situation in contemporary life but also certain values that raise questions about the limits of the private sphere. This ambiguous and chaotic staging aims to subvert the viewer's unconscious. The act of taking a photograph is seen as a genuine performance that demands time : the meeting, the staging and the actual click of the shutter. The different worlds reconstructed here speak of the relationship between a form of dreamed life and a reality that yearns to escape the constraints of the humdrum and the mediocre. While unveiling the intimate aspect of credible but barely probable stories. Aurore Valade expresses her belief in the inevitable tyranny of life - a narrative that always coheres with her intentions.
